This piece was previously posted in the Christmas gift exchange at the [info]sga_art_santa. The gift request was pretty broad: slash/mcshep. Given room to play I drew this:

Bridge

This was interesting to draw. I was a wee bit rushed for time so, yes, the background is a picture of a chasm which I put through a watercolour filter, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I got the image from -- somewhere on the web. I tried a lot of different Photoshop filters wanting to blur out and make the boys come to the fore-front. The background then became the lowest layer in the Firework MX's image I was drawing and I tweaked and shaded a little bit.

There isn't a lot of pics to use as reference points for John hanging precipitously over a chasm. In fact I couldn't find a single one, so I used my trusty wooden opposable doll:

Show and Tell

This did, however, result in John's head been really, really big in the first draft. Luckily, Firework's comes with a really efficient rubber.

A couple of folk asked to see Dean in armour

Dean in Armour

I use a programme called Fireworks to create art, I believe that there are fewer tools (e.g. brushes) than Photoshop, but the principle's the same. Any rate, I usually just use the airbrush and charcoal tool to colour and the basic-soft rounded line tool to draw lines and I use the rubber A LOT. I create a picture by pulling together layers of different aspects. I draw lines in one layer, colour in another etc. It can get complicated with upwards of ten plus layers and multiple sublayers but that means that you can use the rubber with impunity.

I always knew when I was drawing Michael's Sword that the archangel's armour would be overlaid, transparently over a black, trench coated wearing Dean. Hey, Castiel wears a white trench coat, a black trench coat is... evocative. So I had an armour painting in one of the layers, I then basically rubbed the layer out with a rubber but I reduced the intensity depending on how much of the armour I wanted to 'poke' through. This also explains why the armour drawning is a little ropey in a couple of places.

Unsurprisingly, I keep the paintings of all the different main layers, so it’s relatively easy to pull together Dean in Armour.

Belatedly, it occurs to me that rubber has a different meaning in different parts of the world, but since we're talking about Angel Condoms, what the heck.

Rubber = eraser.

This is for [info]bluespirit_star as part of my handmade meme. I’m a hairsbreadth in the ‘It'll be done this year” criteria. I haven’t forgotten about art for [info]elayna88, but I figure that the “It'll be done this year” can be possibly extended a wee, little bit…

I promised that I would ice the Christmas Cake this year. I couldn’t resist. The first time in FOREVER due to: school; long hours; no Christmas holidays other than just the main days.... This year is a proper holiday of an extended period of utter indulgence. So cake…. I got to thinking what I would like to do and voila

Guess the fandoms!

I had the pleasure of 'drawing' for Zinnith’s Hooke’s Law in the [info]sgabigbang

Hooke's Law - Title page

This is the first time I’ve tried anything like this. I liked the construction part of the ‘creation’ (I hesitate to use the word drawing). I’d read Zinnith’s story and I did some outside reading and was intrigued by the equations which underlie Hooke’s Law. Zinnith’s choice of title was perfect for a story which focuses on John’s PTSD under stress and strain. I got to thinking about what I wanted to draw and I was scribbling away and suddenly realised that I had a montage of Rodney’s thought processes which I kind of liked.

In Rodney’s mathematical brain k = ∞ when describing their relationship.

So resources:
1. Heh – that’s my favourite old, pair of glasses. They’re completely unfashionable now and you can’t get them anywhere. Available glasses are always the ‘sexy’, angular, narrow European style. I can’t get my prescription put in this pair because they’re too worn;
2. Books – Biostatistics by Zar; Analysing Ecological Data by Zuur; R coding print out from the R webpages; and Beowulf (which seemed really, really appropriate for this story as John’s battles three monsters – homophobia; stalkers and his own self);
3. graduation congratulations mug – you just know Rodney would drink from one, and
4. a picture snagged from somewhere on the web. I can’t remember where *hangs head*

Hooke's Law Love in Comfort

One of the things I like about the Entangled Particles 'verse is that their relationship feels real – that inherent comfort in a strong relationship (even under stress and strain) is palpable and *Rodney’s* the strong one. I hope that there’s another one on the horizon in this ‘verse.

Resources:
1. I snagged the certificate from the web – it’s a copy of a real Ottawa University certificate tweaked to read Meredith Rodney McKay;
2. A picture of John from Gateworld behind-the-scenes, the perfect angle of his neck which begged to be drawn;
3. John’s posture was inspired by a pic of Sam Winchester sprawling, and
4. [info]bluespirit_star and [info]leyna55 helped me with pictures of Rodney.

I need to find a reference picture of Rodney McKay or DH as himself or in another role, I don't mind I've been looking everywhere for the past fornight and failed!

I need Rodney smiling and looking downwards, either to the floor or to the side (as if glimpsing at someone). Sort of a little like the icon, but more happy. Alternatively, Rodney from above, so we're looking down seeing the scope of his forehead so his nose and mouth is foreshortened.

I can picture the smiling Rodney in my head; it has to exist. The other aspect I'm not too sure of.

help...

I have a dreamwitch account, plus I managed to get the name which I would have loved to have on this journal \o/

I'm not entirely sure how to use it, but I plan to back up LJ there which looks technically very complicated. It will end in tears, heh.

So you see there’s this fic, Sweetheart Deal, by [info]neevebrody, where Rodney basically teases John both deliberately and by just being Rodney and it’s awesome. It was posted a wee while back, but hie yourself on over there and reread it.

I was surfing and quite randomly followed a link to an illustrator called Dorothy Pulis Lathrop, and I fell in love. Her use of lines and stippling; the precision of work; the content predominantly animals and children against fantastical backdrops, are magical. She also draws water in an intriguing stark manner. The pic below is based on her work. It is intended as a homage, I’m just playing and learning.

I simply could not resist drawing Rodney as a mermaid rescuing John who, as if by magic, appeared in the water before him. What actually happened was John got turned about on a patrol, took a misstep in his loosely tied boots, knocked himself silly and fell off the pier. Mer thought it was pretty magical and love a first sight. John took a little bit more convincing.

HANDMADE MEME

The first five people to respond to this post who comment saying they want in on the meme will get something made by me! My choice. For you.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year.
- You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be a story. It may be poetry. I may draw or paint something*.
- I may bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well.

* it is highly likely that if you’re a writer I’ll illustrate a scene from one of your stories.

I got nominated for the McKay/Sheppard awards. I’m absolutely tickled pink. I had to decline two of the nominations because they’re not eligible.

But that’s okay I got nominated! but “I thought they were extinct” and “Firestarter”
are okay because they’re slashy.

Thank you for nominating me.
